Adventure Trekking with the Lost Gringo: an Andean Traverse
Departing from the small coastal town of Hornopirén our group will enter the wilderness at the head of Fiord Cahuelmo. We will spend time soaking in the natural hot springs and gathering our courage before we test our fortitude against the wild and previously unvisited Mirta River. Days of trail-less exploration up this river will only be rewarded if we can succeed at reaching the Andean crest. From the the alpine pass' highpoint we start descending into Argentina and into one of the many large tributaries of the Turbio. Argentinean Gauchos of the lower valleys have penetrated deep into theses canyons, but we'll see no evidence of their passage for two more hard days of hiking. The final leg of the journey starts when all the branches of the Turbio join and we'll be faced with the final crux. How do we safely navigate this immense, wild blue and green river valley? Its outlet 12 miles (20km) away leads into Lago Puelo and connects us with civilization ...again.
Sounds intense... you bet!
